malta_stampsFor the first time Malta's Christmas stamps will be part of an issue which will be partnered with Philatelic and Numismatic Bureau of the Vatican.

The stamps feature details coming from The Nativity, which is one of the paintings created by Giuseppe Cali'. The painting itself can be found at St Andrew's parish church, located in Luqa.

The Vatican bureau is going to use the same imagery on its own set of stamps. An innovation for Malta is the fact that the Vatican stamps were printed using the technology brought by Printex Ltd of Qormi. The face values of Malta stamps are as follows: 8c/o0.19, 16c/o0.37 and 27c/o0.63.

Work on the naves in the town church of St Andrew was about to end by the end of 1904.

Luqa's residents felt, however, that the 4 genuine paintings would look too small if there are compared to the new altars. That is why they decided to commission a new set of paintings.

The Nativity by Cali' (1846-1930) illustrates Baby Jesus in a manger, being surrounded by Mary, Joseph, two countrywomen and a young girl.
