Nintendo Is Nr. 1 in Consoles Sales This Year
According
to latest report provided by the leading global market research company, NPD Group, May of 2008 turned out to be
the fourth month in a row that Nintendo
becomes the leader in console selling. Nintendo
Wii and the Nintendo DS were the
two consoles that registered top sale in this year's fourth month.
It is worth mentioning that the Japanese console seller managed to sell 675,000 Wii consoles in May and about 453,000 DS in the same period. The two consoles were followed by Sony's Play Station 3, with fewer than 209,000 units sold, and Xbox, 186,000 units of which were sold by the software giant, Microsoft.
There should not be any surprise in the fact that the best selling game in May was Grand Theft Auto 4, developed by Take-Two. There were 871,000 copies of the game sold, which increased the software sales by 41 percent from the same period last year with overall sales reaching about $540 million. Despite the crazy sales of GTA IV the experts at NPD Group consider that they had little influence on the sales of the console, but the influence might still take place in the near future.
The overall sales of consoles, games and accessories registered a significant increase of 37 percent from May 2007, bringing a total income of $1.12 billion.
It is believed that the success of Nintendo Wii was gained thanks to the newly introduced Wii Fit balance board controller. Reggie Fils-Aime, who holds the position of the president of Nintendo of America, mentioned that the company currency faces more shortages for Ninendo Wii game consoles. According to Mr. Fils-Aime, till now this situation has served well for him. He made a joke saying that the company hopes to be able to bring the sales of the Wii console to a more "balanced" level.
